Opleiding: Master in International Finance (MSc)

Leerdoel

Running successfully since 1996, the MIF is designed to provide a thorough training in the theoretical and practical aspects of international finance.
This well-established programme is based in Amsterdam and draws on the University's recognised centre of excellence in finance and financial economics. The course is available to full-time and part-time students, is taught in English and is truly international in both its student body and its approach to finance. It is ideal for those seeking to commence a career in finance, others looking for a career change or established finance professionals who are looking to boost their career prospects.

Doelgroep

We are looking for students for whom the program represents a challenge and a good career-fit. The MIF has a strong international focus and has been designed for ambitious professionals and academics wishing to pursue, or change their career in international business, banking or government. The participants come from many different counties and cultural backgrounds. The part-time students continue to work during their studies, while full-time students are only focusing on the MIF for one year. Both groups meet each other in class. Students are expected to go on to senior management levels.

The planned intake of the MIF starting every September is around sixty students. A strict selection procedure is applied, in order to ensure that only high quality students are admitted to the program. The MIF aims to have highly international classes, with students originating from different countries all over the globe. All share the same though: the ambition and capability to pursue a challenging business degree.

Programma

Drawing on faculty with wide international experience in both international finance and international economics, courses are offered introducing students to recent developments in international corporate finance, investments, banking and financial engineering. The courses aim to prepare students for a professional rather than an academic career. Nevertheless, high academic standards are maintained and students will be introduced to the most recent research in the respective areas. At the same time, sponsoring institutions in the area of international finance are involved in curriculum development and evaluation, hereby guaranteeing that the course material offered has a high degree of practical relevance. The two groups (part-time and full-time) interact throughout the program. All courses are conducted in English. After successful completion of their studies, students are awarded the degree of Master in International Finance.

Calendar
The programme will start in the first week of September. The four preliminary core courses are completed before Christmas. The electives and advanced core courses would be completed halfway June. June, July and August are available for the internship and thesis.

1st semester
In the first semester all students follow a common curriculum designed to provide a firm foundation in international finance and economics. The core courses in this semester are, , Investments, Financial Econometrics,Advanced Corporate Finance & Valuation, Financial Derivates, International Financial Management, and M&A, Restructuring and Corporate Finance.

2nd semester
During the first semester students decide on the electives they wish to follow. The course load in this semester currently involves 2 core courses and 3 electives. These electives, like Real Estate Finance, Fixed Income, Advanced Financial Econometrics and Advanced Asset Management, will be offered according to student demand.

Final thesis and internship
The final requirement of the MIF program is a thesis. Most of our full-time students complete this while serving an internship at a European financial firm. The thesis is usually based on the application of concepts from one of the core areas of the program to a practical project in the students work environment. This gives students the opportunity to apply their academic knowledge in a practical situation. It also provides invaluable work experience leading to employment in a large number of cases.

Full-time programme

The course-load of the full-time programme is approximately 40 hours per week. In each study period, students take 4 parallel classes. Classes are scheduled Monday to Thursday. Classes will take up 15 hours while class preparation, casework and assignments will require a further 25 hours per week.

Part-time programme

The part-time programme is an evening programme designed to allow students to work full-time while completing their Amsterdam MBA. Classes are held two nights a week, taking up between 6-8 hours. Class preparation, casework and assignments count for another 10-12 hours a week.

Toelatingseisen

Applicants are required to hold a recognized Bachelor's or Master's degree from a research university. Depending on your academic background, you may be required to complete part or all of the MIF pre-course training (summer course) before the start of the regular course programme. Students holding BSc or BA degrees from research university programmes in finance or economics/business with a strong focus on finance will be regularly exempted from the pre-course training. Work experience is not required.
To ensure that students are well suited to the course, and to maintain the reputation of the programme, we will require evidence of English language proficiency (TOEFL or IELTS) and general management aptitude (GMAT). The GMAT is also a useful independent guide for the Admission Committee. Part-time students can opt to take our in-house SHL test as a substitute for the GMAT or GRE.

Students with a Bachelor degree issued by a University of Applied Sciences (HBO)

Candidates holding a Bachelor degree from a Research University are directly eligible for admission to our programme.

However, students with a Bachelor degree issued by a "University of Applied Sciences" (HBO) seeking admission, either full time or part time, will require additional pre-Master coursework in order to attain eligibility.
Such pre-Master coursework should be aimed at boosting the candidate's knowledge in the following areas:
 Strategic Management and Marketing
 Marketing Management
 Strategy and Organisation
 Quantitative Methods
 Management Research Methods
 Academic Project
 Finance or HRM (one of these electives)

The University of Amsterdam offers a pre-Master programme that covers these courses.
