Fontys School of Visual & Performing Arts: the Academy of Architecture and Urbanism, Tilburg, The Netherlands, offers the Professional Master course of Urbanism.

The Master programme ‘Urbanism' is internationally orientated, topical, creative, conceptual, intellectual and practice based.

The master study is a design-directed education: the process of learning is similar to the process of designing.

 

This unique type of education combines the professional and educational worlds: education in concurrency with employment in the profession. We have created an inter-active climate by combining a three to four day's job in an urban design firm or related and the Master specialist of Urbanism. A climate in which ‘problems' out of the day to day practice are used as assignments in Studio work classes, and/ or as conceptual problems to be studied in the Urban Design theory lectures at the Academy.

 

The Design Studio is the heart of the master programme. The most important aim of this study is to develop one's own design skills and position in the world of Urban design, in a challenging dialogue with the development of design skills, methods and position in the world of urbanism. The student is challenged to produce experimental, non-conventional design- and realisable proposals. The emphasis in the design studio is laid on ‘research design attitude'.

 

 

Programma

The core of the programme is formed by studio work: project learning. Student tackle individually or in teams "problems" that are embedded in a given assignment.

The studio work is related to specific theoretical subjects.

 

Programme structure & content

First three years:

 

Theory and Practice of Urban design:

 

  • Urban design theory
  • Studio work
  • Workshops and symposia
  • Portfolio design and theory (End of the year presentation: portfolio/ exhibition)

 

Fourth year:

  • Graduation Project (Urban Design)

    Toelatingseisen

    Bachelor (B/ BSc) Urban Design, Urbanism/ Town and Country-planning.

    Applicants have to work 3 to 4 days per week at a relevant place (urban design or town-planning firm or related). Working experience is required from the start on.
