Our parttime and fulltime International MBA Programmes are aimed at (young) professionals who are willing and eager to invest in their human capital, an investment that they will carry with them through their professional career, and not only to their next job.
Our MBA Programme is different in that it includes the accepted fundamentals of business education like financial management and business strategy, which we refer to as 'the science of business', while also offering what we call 'art of business' topics like Business Skills and Cross Cultural Management.
Our students and faculty are coming from around the globe. Many of our full-time students are from developing countries and emerging, transition economies, while many of the part-time students are coming from multi-national companies, Dutch and foreign, located in Amsterdam like Nike, Heineken, ING Bank, KPMG to name a few. The world is facing a difficult task: the peaceful globalisation of societies and economies. In this context, and in response to a very volatile business environment, we are seeing businesses merge, re-engineer themselves, or indeed disappear, with startling speed. The world currently offers ever greater challenges to the business community. Although companies have always had to deal with the dynamics of markets and technologies, in recent years the speed of change has increased tremendously. Innovation and learning are essential for identifying and exploiting new business opportunities. Strategic decisions on investments in new technologies must be taken rapidly, so a clear insight in the market potential of new innovations is essential. Therefore, companies have a stronger need than ever for highly qualified managers with a multidisciplinary background, who can guide and steer the company in a rapidly changing world market. They seek employees who can make quick decisions and achieve results, professionals who can manage information and define and solve problems. All industries are currently confronted with far-reaching changes in government policy, shifts in the balance of international trade and the conversion from production driven to consumer driven trade. All companies face tighter constraints due to increases in manufacturer product liability and stricter environmental legislation.
HES Post-Graduate Programmes believes that a student should not only have a certain level of academic ability, but should also be able to do. This combination of theory and practice not only stimulates a direct application of theoretical knowledge, but also at the same time promotes critical assessment of the suitability of scientific concepts to daily business life. Students are placed in situations which are very similar to those faced regularly by managers in business. They must make important decisions, under considerable time pressure, and often with very limited information. The three pillars of personal development, knowledge acquisition and the transferral of that knowledge into practical situations are central to the Post-Graduate Programmes.
Thanks to the core skills developed by our courses, alumni will be in a significantly better position as managers to being solving difficult problems in an uncertain global environment. HES Post-Graduate Programmes maintains close contact with a number of internationally based companies to ensure that the course content and result of the programme meet the needs of international business. Master in Controlling
HES Post-Graduate Programmes biedt naast de International MBA ook de Master in Controlling aan, een praktijkgeorienteerde masteropleiding met nadrukkelijke aandacht voor de ‘zachte’ aspecten van controllership.
Organisaties worden geconfronteerd met steeds ingrijpender veranderingen die elkaar in hoog tempo opvolgen. Dat dit realiteit is, blijkt uit de ontwikkelingen op het gebied van informatie- en communicatietechnologie (IT), het ontstaan van nieuwe markten, een toenemend bewustzijn dat organisaties grote verantwoordelijkheden hebben ten opzichte van de maatschappij, het grote aantal overnames, fusies en ontvlechtingen, en de opkomst van private equity en hedge funds. Leidinggeven aan organisaties wordt hierdoor steeds complexer. Met die complexiteit groeit de behoefte aan goede informatie: zowel managers als belanghebbenden van organisaties worden geconfronteerd met een overdaad aan informatie waarvan bepaald moet worden of die informatie wel nodig is, of ze juist is, en of er ondanks die overdaad geen informatie ontbreekt. Daarnaast is het vertrouwen van aandeelhouders in de leiding van ondernemingen sterk gedaald door diverse schandalen. Corporate governance - deugdelijk ondernemingsbestuur – staat hoog op de agenda van de kapitaalmarkten. Aandeelhouders en andere belanghebbenden eisen steeds vaker beheersingssystemen die bijdragen aan een deugdelijk bestuur. De controller speelt in het ontwerp en het functioneren van deze systemen een belangrijke rol. Hij ondersteunt en adviseert het management dat doorgaans de noodzakelijke kennis op dit gebied ontbeert en vaak ook niet de tijd heeft om hier voldoende aandacht aan te besteden. De controller kan een corporate governance-structuur ontwerpen die bijdraagt aan de continue uitwisseling van informatie en waarborgt dat de belangen van alle belanghebbenden voldoende worden behartigd.
Bij iedere MiC-opleiding wordt studenten kennis en kunde bijgebracht in de kerndisciplines Accounting, Financiering en Control. HES Post-Graduate Programmes onderscheidt zich van andere opleidingen door daarnaast zeer nadrukkelijk aandacht te besteden aan de zachte aspecten van controllership zoals maatschappelijke verantwoordelijkheid, ethische standaarden en de rol van de controller als manager, adviseur van de directie, ontwerper van financiële systemen en regisseur van plannings- en beheersingsprocessen. Deze combinatie van 'harde' en 'zachte' aspecten van het vak biedt toegevoegde waarde voor onze studenten en hun werkgevers. Onze opleiding leidt breed georiënteerde controllers op die in staat zijn financieel beleid te ondersteunen met aandacht voor de maatschappelijke context; het management van betrouwbare informatie te voorzien; leiding te geven aan een financiële afdeling; en onderzoeksgegevens te verzamelen en te beoordelen door middel van toegepast onderzoek. De afgestudeerde is daardoor een vakbekwame controller die besef heeft van zijn vertrouwenspositie zowel in het maatschappelijk verkeer als in zijn eigen organisatie.
Het curriculum heeft een sterke internationale component en besteedt veel aandacht aan de vaardigheden die de controller in de praktijk nodig heeft. Daarnaast is er fors geïnvesteerd in de wetenschappelijke component van het onderwijs. Zo krijgen studenten de mogelijkheid om een week onderwijs te volgen aan de Suffolk University in Boston (Massachusetts, VS) en daar bedrijfsbezoeken af te leggen. Daarnaast heeft de opleiding met een aantal gerenommeerde hoogleraren afspraken gemaakt om vanaf 2008 periodiek gastcolleges te verzorgen.
