Opleiding: European Management Residency

Leerdoel

What can you learn from a European perspective on a changing world and how can you transfer this knowledge to analyse and possibly solve a business problem in your own national context? The European Management Residency exposes the participants to European business practices, management behaviour and leadership styles through interactive lectures, discussion forums, company visits, and leadership development workshops and trainings.

Doelgroep

The European Management Residency in Maastricht is a customised programme for groups of master, postgraduate or MBA students registered at business schools and universities world-wide.

Programma

The European Management Residency programme is flexible in design and can be tailored to the specific needs and wishes of the business school or university. Below you will find some suggestions on themes to centre the programme around.

Theme 1: Leadership and Strategic Change

In this programme leading strategic change is the central theme. Strategic change is essentially changing direction (also culture) or changing processes within an organization. The scope and impact of strategic change is often huge and subsequently also its impact on the relationships within an organization. This is also what differentiates strategic change from regular strategic change processes that keep the organization moving on a daily basis. Leading strategic change centres around the question how to translate a planned change into action in practice. As a leader of a strategic change you have to be aware of the different implications that a change initiative can have on the operational, tactical, and strategic level of the organization. Your role is crucial in this process. Leading change means being able to operate in the dynamic arena of hierarchy, cooperation and autonomy.

Key words: change management, authentic leadership, mental models, dialogue, resistance, problem-solving, systems thinking, creativity and innovation.

Theme 2: Entrepreneurship and Business

The societal impact of enterprising individuals cannot be contested. They start-up companies that challenge (and often replace) incumbents, and they have an important role in introducing innovative products and services to new or established markets. However, entrepreneurs never operate in isolation. They use legal, fiscal and/or financial services (often provided by entrepreneurial firms as well), they require infrastructures (buildings, laboratories), and employees. Many entrepreneurs co-found their venture with others. In this European Management Residency, we will identify factors that drive entrepreneurship, both at the level of an economy and at the level of an enterprising individual or team. You will explore how entrepreneurs not only rely on generic business management principles, but also how they cope with the uncertainty, risk, scarcity of time, capital and other resources that is inherent to all entrepreneurial venturing. In this course we will explore the nature of entrepreneurial opportunity, and you will unravel how entrepreneurs seek to appropriate the returns from their enterprising behaviour. You will also search for characteristics of successful entrepreneurs and/or entrepreneurial teams.

Key words: entrepreneurial spirit, environment for entrepreneurship, intellectual property, entrepreneurial finance, new business development, innovation.

Theme 3: European Economy and Policy

Firms operate within an international economic context. The current economic crisis illustrates how interrelated the world-economy is nowadays, and how quickly economic problems can spread around the world. Changes in exchange rates, interest rates, expectations and trust, and developments in inflation and unemployment all have their influence on the (strategic) policy of firms. In addition, increasing globalization forces all sorts of organizations to take note of global economic developments. Hence, for a Dutch company, changes in monetary policy in the US are as important as changes in monetary policy by the ECB in Frankfurt. Note that not only Trichet (chair of the ECB), but also Bernanke (chair of the Federal Reserve System (FED)) is on the cover of European magazines and newspapers. This raises the question how to analyse these international factors from an economic perspective? And, what relations exist between the various economies in the world? These questions will be discussed during this programme. Globalization also leads to stronger competition from Eastern Europe or the BRIC countries. To understand the opportunities and risks of these developments, it is important to have a good understanding about the various markets in which a company operates. Why are these issues relevant for your company? One argument is that the answers to these questions will be used in developing the strategic policy of your company. Such a policy implies long-term decisions like the development of the product-market portfolio, the choice of for example production sites, innovation policies and so on. The assignments in this programme aim to relate economic developments to the strategic policy of firms.

Key words: macro-economics, economic and monetary union, innovation and economic growth, EU policy making post-Lisboa, economic foundations of business strategy.

Company visits

The chosen theme will be enriched by related company visits. Possible visits could include:

  • A visit to the European Commission in Brussels (Belgium), the European Central Bank in Frankfurt (Germany), or the European Investment Bank in Luxembourg (Luxembourg).
  • Visits to companies such as for example DSM, Philips, Medtronic, Vodafone, Océ Group

Leadership Development Trajectory

In addition, the European Management Residency includes elements of a distinct feature of the School, the Leadership Development Trajectory. This trajectory consists of activities to promote the understanding of management behaviour and leadership styles, local people and culture. Some examples of these activities are:

  • Skills training sessions that are held at alternative locations such as the Mondo Verde Gardens or the GaiaPark Zoo.
  • Working in mutual learning groups on a local social innovation project.
  • Visiting the Three Countries Triangle of Netherlands, Belgium and Germany to experience the cultural differences.

Team based project

One of the features of the European Management Residency is a team based action learning project. In teams of 4-5 people, the students work on a strategic issue for a company or do a country analysis. The findings of this team based project are presented to a jury of academics and business representatives.
