The Strategy Consultant's Approach to Problem Solving
This two-day programme will boost your effectiveness in finding solutions to complex and/or strategic business problems, by exposing you to a variety of best practice methods and techniques, developed by the top global management consulting firms. The programme will cover the identification of problems, through to planning, communication, and successful implementation of solutions. During the programme you will identify your own project to implement: a follow up afternoon session will be scheduled 2-3 months later to evaluate this and address any issues encountered.
Participants in the programme will:
- Gain more confidence as they add to their ‘toolbox’ of available solutions to help them deal with business problems
- Learn and apply business problem solving methods and techniques used by the top global management consulting firms
- Develop critical insights into the use of these, including the limitations and common pitfalls
- Practice skills relevant to their own work situation, during the case discussions, small group exercises, and presentations
- Receive feedback from expert faculty on how they are progressing.
Curriculum
Day 1
Morning: Communicating; logical structuring and presentation of solutions
Afternoon: Problem Solving: Issue framing, hypotheses formulation and analyses
Day 2
Morning: Evaluating Solutions: system and stakeholders perspective
Afternoon: Implementing Solutions: translating solutions into actions
2-3 months later: Participants will return for a half-day session to present and receive feedback on their personal project progress.

Faculty
Dr Marc Baaij Marc Baaij is an Associate Professor of Strategic Management at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University Rotterdam (RSM). Marc was a strategy consultant and research manager of the Dutch office of the Boston Consulting Group. He also worked for IBM in the Netherlands.He is the academic director of RSM's Executive Master in Management Consultancy, and teaches on the RSM Diploma Programme in Business Management & Leadership, the flagship programme of RSM’s Executive Education & Organisational Development department. Marc is the author of ‘The Consultancy Method: From Problem to Solution’ (2011, currently in Dutch only) and co-author of ‘The Craft of Strategy Formation: Translating Business Issues into Actionable Strategies’ (2007). James Parker James Parker is a Partner at Parma Consulting Group, and has more than 20 years experience in consulting and managing professional organisations. He worked for McKinsey in North America, UK and the Netherlands, was a founding partner of Mitchell Madison Group, and Managing Partner of Boer & Croon Corporate Strategy. He was also a Director of First Level Young Executives and manager of Barclays Bank International in Canada and Zaire. James has a MA from Oxford and an MBA from INSEAD. James co-authored ‘Changing the Leopard’s Spots. Renewal of the Professional Firm’ (2009).

Fee: € 1.900 (excl. VAT 19%) 10% discount for EUR and RSM alumni
