Test of english as a foreign language (TOEFL)
| Auteur | TOEFL |

More than 6,000 institutions and agencies in 110 countries rely on TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) test to select students with the English skills needed to succeed. The TOEFL test opens more doors than any other academic English test. It covers all facets of English proficiency, including a test of spoken English and grammar exercises.
The TOEFL test measures the ability of nonnative speakers of English to use and understand English as it is spoken, written, and heard in college and university settings. The test is offered in different formats depending on a test taker's location.
In Europe the TOEFL test is offered in Internetbased Testing (iBT) format at an authorized Educational Testing Service (ETS) test center in your chosen location. The TOEFL iBT tests all four language skills that are important for effective communication: reading, listening, speaking and writing.
The test helps students demonstrate that they have the English skills needed for success. The content on the test is authentic, and the language is consistent with that used in everyday, real academic settings. The test has four sections that take about four hours to complete:
- Reading (60-100 minutes, 36-70 questions) measures the ability to understand academic reading material
- Listening (60-90 minutes, 34-51 questions) measures the ability to understand spoken English as it is used in colleges and universities.
10 minute break
- Speaking (20 minutes, 6 tasks) measures the ability to speak English in an academic context
- Writing (time limit 50 minutes, 2 tasks) measures the ability to write in a way that is appropriate for college and university course work.
Test content is based on a “corpus,” or database, of spoken and written language that currently contains more than 2.7 million words, collected from educational institutions throughout the United States. The spoken language in the database was collected from:
- lectures and interactive classes
- labs
- office hours
- study groups
- everyday service interactions (for example, at the bookstore or registrar's office)
For the Internet-based test, you will receive four section scores and a total score:
- Reading (0-30)
- Listening (0-30)
- Speaking (0-30)
- Writing (0-30)
- Total Score (0-120)
The TOEFL iBT fee varies by country. In the Netherlands and United Kingdom for instance, the TOEFL iBT test fee is US$ 155. Your TOEFL test payment entitles you to one printed and one online examinee score record and up to four official score reports that ETS will send directly to the institutions or agencies you designate when registering for the test. Scores are posted online 15 business days after the test date (with a few exceptions) and then mailed to you and your designated score recipients.
